THE FOURTH GRADE CLASS OF FRANKLIN SCHOOL IN SCHENECTADY, NEW YORK, SOWED THE SEED FOR THE NAME SCHENECTADY BY SUGGESTING TO THE SECRETARY OF THE NAVY THAT SOME NEW SHIP MIGHT BE CHRISTENED WITH THE NAME OF THEIR TOWN AND COUNTY IN JUNE OF 1968, THE STUDENTS RECEIVED A TELEGRAM FROM SECRETARY PAUL H. IGNATIUS, INFORMING THEM THAT THE NAME SCHENECTADY HAD BEEN ASSIGNED TO THE NAVY'S NEW TANK LANDING SHIP, LST-1185
